CANTON OFFICIALS
RETURN GOVERNOR'S VISIT TO CANTON
GOVERNMENT HOUSE BANQUET AND OTHER FUNCTIONS
A CORDIAL WELCOME
Some of South China's most distinguished leaders arrived in Hongkong yesterday morning to return the call made some time ago on Marshal Chiang Kai-shek by H.E. the Governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott. Leading the delegation of officials was H.E. General Huang Mu-sung, Chairman of the Kwangtung Provincial Government and with him came the Mayor of Canton, Mr. Tseng Yang-fu.
The welcome accorded the distinguished visitors by local Chinese was scarcely less warm than the official welcome. Long before the train was due hundreds pressed about the Kowloon station to catch a glimpse of the General, while later at Queen's Pier the roads were lined nine or ten deep by crowds anxious to see the party.
Three guards of honour were drawn up for the event, one at the station, one at Queen's Pier and one at Government House. A salute of seventeen guns was fired from H.M.S. Adventure as the visitors crossed the harbour in the Governor's launch.
A round of entertainment has been arranged for the party during its two days' stay here, opening with a luncheon party yesterday and a banquet at night, at Government House.
The K. C. R. railway station at Kowloon was cleared of people half an hour before the party arrived, and a detachment of over 50 police, under Chief Inspector F. E. E. Booker and Inspector K. W. Andrew, lined the platform and the route to the wait- ing launches. A band supplied by the 2nd. Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers, and a guard of honour from the same regiment, marched onto the platform shortly before the train arrived, the tail of the proces- sion being formed by the Battalion's famous goat.
When the Canton officials, who had been joined at Shum Chun by Mr. R. D. Walker, Manager of the British section of the K.C.R., arrived at Kowloon at 11.10 a.m. they were met by Captain W. J. Cragg, A.D.C. to H.E. the the Governor, the Secretary for Chinese Affairs (Mr. W. J. Carrie), the Hon. Commander G. F. Hole, R.N., Harbour Master, Mr. R. R. When they drew abreast of H.M.S. Adventure in the centre of the harbour the launches halted while a salute of 17 guns was fired and the Chinese flag was run to the top of the foremast of the warship.
Continuing their trip across the harbour the launches landed the party at Queen's Pier, where the visitors were received by the Acting Colonial Secretary (Hon. Mr. R. A. C.
